Hello Light; Journey of the Artist Within

Schedule: Mondays

Cost: Members $220 + $15 Supply Fee | Non-Members $275 + $15 Supply Fee | OR $25 per class

Program Description: 
Participate in an exploration of the relationship between personal resilience and creative process. Led by co-designer Bob Savage and local artist and therapist Jenna Weiss, this course uses color, line, shape and form to better understand our human capacity for courage in the face of adversity.

Designed for people who are curious about their journey ahead with cognitive change, participants create unique products on canvas utilizing acrylic paint around themes of:
Being Me, My Personal Journey of Diagnosis, Spirituality and Hope.

No former experience in art or painting necessary. Participants work at their own pace, guided and supported by the group and its mentors.

In this program you will cultivate: 
- Improved concentration  
- Cognitive reserve
- Wellbeing through creativity  








Facilitator Biography

Bob Savage | Course Co-Designer
Bob served for four years in the Air Force, and two years working in administration. He graduated from Bryant University with a major in Business Management Magna Cum Laude. Bob worked for eleven years in the marketing division of The Singer Manufacturing Co, New York, NY. He then taught 7th grade in an urban public school, going on to teach GED in Addiction Recovery Program run and managed by persons in recovery.

Bob joined the staff of the Alcohol and Drug Commission in Hartford as Director of Special Projects. He organized and managed different specialties charged with monitoring all alcohol and drug treatment programs in the state of Connecticut.
At the age of 76 Bob retired. At the age of 83, he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease.

As a resident of LiveWell, Bob continued a career in advocacy at the local and state level to reduce the stigma of living with Alzheimer’s and dementia. Bob is a founding member of the Dementia Peer Coalition that became the foundation for the Empowering Partnerships Network.

Bob uses theater and visual art to reach a community-wide audience to initiate conversations of inclusion, myth busting, and purposeful living for people in Connecticut living with dementia.


Facilitator Biography

Jenna Weiss R-DMT, LNHA| Wellbeing Director of Learning and Creative Arts
Jenna is inspired by embodied movement practices, creative arts and mindfulness in addition to a great deal of curiosity about the capacity of the human spirit for resilience and recovery. As a master’s level Dance/Movement Therapist with over 25 years of practicing body-centered learning with older adults, she is most interested in learning from individuals with a lived experience of dementia the unique gifts and perspectives involved in navigating life with cognitive change. As a pioneer leader in the LiveWell Institute and the Director of Learning and Creative Arts, she is passionate about dialogue and the process of collaborative design through the perspective of ‘Nothing about US Without Us’, partnering with individuals living with cognitive change to make systemic change. She holds a license as a nursing home administrator and brings collaboration as a consultant into residential communities for older adults.  She is a self- taught painter, fiber artist and paddle-boarder with two teens at home, James and Cam and two cats, Lulu and Trixie.
