Program Description:
This course is designed exclusively for individuals experiencing early cognitive change to moderate dementia. CST has been found to improve general cognitive functioning, language comprehension and production, and quality of life. Each CST session is designed to stimulate thinking and memory, and connect with others in a fun, social, and relaxed atmosphere. The sessions follow a general theme, with activities chosen based on the interests of the group. Groups are limited to 6-8 participants. Our approach to brain fitness is an evidence-based practice referred to as Cognitive Stimulation Therapy and is delivered by LiveWell’s trained dementia specialists.
Participants will take active steps to:
- Improve brain function
- Maintain independence
- Decrease depression
- Build confidence
- Improve self-esteem
Facilitator Biography
Moira Shapland | LiveWell Faculty
Moira has worked in healthcare for over 15 years, providing a rich variety of therapeutic recreation interventions to a wide spectrum of individuals. She obtained her BA in Psychology in 1989 and obtained her state certification in Therapeutic Recreation in 1996.
Moira's passion is connecting individuals with nature, particularly through Horticulture Therapy, which can include improved mood, decreases in depression and anxiety, improved memory and cognition abilities, improved language skills and socialization, increased self-esteem, improved motor skills and creative expression. Horticulture Therapy can create an almost immediate sense of peace and joy in a person's life, no matter what the individual's cognitive or physical abilities may be.
Moira enjoys spending time with her family and is the proud mother of three amazing adult children. She loves gardening, cooking, the beach and spending as much time outdoors as possible!
